At the beginning of the semester, our Enactus team was faced with the challenge of collecting old car seats to be recycled, which in turn would employ people with mental and physical disabilities. As we struggled with exactly how we were going to get this done, we came up with the idea of doing a car seat drive. Now we cannot take 100% credit for this idea because it has been done in the past, but we wanted to modify our car seat drive in two ways.
1. Partner with the biggest retailer in the world
2. Leverage current marketing channels
Our team decided we should reach out to Walmarts in the region to see if they would be willing to partner with us and house our car seat collection boxes. Not all of the stores we called were willing to help, but some were. We were able to partner with Walmarts in:
Cottage Grove, MN
Redwood Falls, MN
Sioux Center, IA
One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting the word out about the drive. We used Facebook as our primary vehicle to spread awareness. We posted in groups who we thought might have old car seats that they would donate. We also called daycares, schools, and other non-competing businesses to see if they could hang up and hand out flyers.
We have already seen huge successes at all of our locations. At Marshall's location alone we were able to collect about 50 car seats! We are excited to see the total number we are able to collect once all of our drives conclude. We are super thankful for the stores that have helped us out and we look forward to future successes with this project.
